The Apprenticeship Workforce Development (AWD) programme, funded by the Department for Education (DfE), has been designed to support staff at all levels and in all roles to deliver high-quality apprenticeships.
Now in its second phase, AWD is being delivered by the ETF in partnership with the Association of Colleges (AoC), Association of Employment and Learning Providers (AELP), Strategic Development Network (SDN) and University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC). This phase of the programme extends support to employers involved in apprenticeship delivery.
To keep informed of developments, sign up to the ETF’s Technical Education/Apprenticeships newsletter by filling out your details and ticking the appropriate box.
There are eight courses from phase one of the AWD programme available on FutureLearn. These can be accessed via the ETF’s 职业发展平台 (PDP) once you have created an account. You can also download the ‘Working Effectively with Employers’ guide below.
This guide will help providers to make the most of collaboration with employers. It identifies the benefits of collaboration and how to build on these, while also recognising that creating and sustaining effective working relationships can be difficult. Checklists, self-assessments and action plans are provided in the guide to help you tackle these challenges.
New CPD training and resources are currently being developed as part of phase two of AWD. These resources are being shaped by a training needs analysis of the sector, which has involved a sector-wide survey conducted in November and December 2022, focus groups, sector research, and the expert knowledge of all delivery partners. New CPD for phase two of AWD will be available from Autumn 2023.

Watch Cerian Ayres, ETF’s National Head of Technical Education, and Charlotte Bonner, ETF’s National Head of Education for Sustainable Development, discuss apprenticeships and Education for Sustainable Development in ‘Preparing apprentices for the world of work, and the work of the world’ recorded at AELP’s 2021 Spring Conference.
Within the context of the apprenticeship reforms and the government’s target to deliver 3 million apprentices by 2020, our support for apprenticeships will help managers, teachers, trainers, assessors, employers, leaders and those involved in governance to make the transition from apprenticeship frameworks to delivery of standards, ensuring effective preparation for end-point assessment.
There are five key areas of support:
This programme builds on the success of the Future Apprenticeships programme which delivered high quality continuing professional development to almost 7000 colleagues. The legacy resources of this programme will remain accessible to providers. The new offer supports workforce development through the pivotal stage of technical education reform to build capacity for improvement in teaching, learning and assessment, ensuring successful outcomes for individuals, communities and business.
